How To Spot Trouble With Your Radiator

As a vehicle owner, you will want to make sure that you are as clued in to the signs of a possible problem with your radiator. This way, you can have it resolved quickly, and hopefully before you find yourself stranded along the side of the road. Here are some of the signs that may indicate that your vehicle is having this sort of trouble:

Your Vehicle Keeps Overheating

This is a problem that could be caused simply because you forgot to check the level of the coolant in your vehicle in a while. However, if you have found that there is enough coolant in the reserve, or that what you put in there keeps disappearing rather quickly, it is most likely that you have a bad radiator. It is best if you stop driving the vehicle immediately, as you could create many more problems with it if you don't. You could also find yourself stranded along the side of a road if you continue to drive the vehicle with an overheating problem, as the radiator will eventually just completely give out and the vehicle will not be able to continue any further.

You Spot Sludge Within The Radiator

Never remove the cap to the radiator while the vehicle is still warm, as you can end up with serious burns. However, once the vehicle is completely cold, you can carefully remove the radiator cap. If along the inside of the cap or in the inside of the radiator, you are finding that there is what looks to be a lot of sludge, this is a bad sign. You will want to take your vehicle to a skilled mechanic right away. This way, if the problem can be fixed you will be able to get back on the road. It is important to have a professional figure out just what it is that is causing the sludge so it will not automatically happen with any other radiator that you put in the vehicle. It could be that there is fluid from the transmission getting into the radiator and mixing with the coolant. This happens when the barrier between the transmission and the radiator is ruined.

With those two signs of trouble in mind, you should have an easy enough time figuring out if the radiator in your vehicle is in some trouble. You could make the repairs yourself if you have the right experience, or simply take it to a mechanic you trust so you can be back on the road in no time at all.
